SEONG-JAE LAY CATCHING HIS BREATH with Malcolm’s head pillowed against his chest, that wild fall of hair pouring over Seong-Jae’s ribs; he slipped his fingers through it lazily, coiling the silvery strands around his fingers, idly tracking glimmers against the ceiling as headlights from the road spilled through the blinds to paint faint glowing slits and speckles in arcs across the stucco.

He was sore inside in a way he had not been for some time—and sore outside, too, his body worn from tensing and straining, the bite-mark on his shoulder throbbing. He had not realized how much he missed that feeling; how much that feeling reminded him with every moment of every day that when he walked, when he moved, when he felt that ache and that stretch inside him that told him how much he had been used, taken, loved…

Malcolm was with him.

And he was with Malcolm.

It was a small thing, a thing that should not matter so much when he had always, his entire life, been so indifferent to sex…

But with Malcolm, it mattered.

It was impossible for Malcolm to touch Seong-Jae’s body without touching Seong-Jae’s heart.

And right now, with that feeling of Malcolm inside him still, lingering long after they had separated and collapsed to relax into each other…

Seong-Jae’s heart felt quiet, and full, and clean.

For the first time in days, he felt clean of that shadow; that black and terrible taint that pushed him toward craving the unholy things that would drive him back into the darkness.

“Malcolm?” he whispered, and the old wolf stirred with a gruff, sleepy sound.

“Mm…?” Thick arms tightened around Seong-Jae, locked around his waist.

“We can do this, can we not?” He traced the length of one lock of hair back to Malcolm’s temple, skimming his fingertips along his hairline. “I…I need to believe we truly are equal to this task. That we truly are closing in.”

“We are,” Malcolm promised, and sealed that promise with a kiss to the apex of Seong-Jae’s ribs, beard a soothing scratch against his skin. “Together, Seong-Jae…we’re equal to anything the world can throw at us.”

Together.

Seong-Jae would hold on to that.

As he held on to Malcolm, as together…

They slid into sleep.

And for the first time in days, he truly rested.
